Jewish South Africa celebrates Heritage Day Carnival

Yesterday South African Jewry celebrated National Heritage Day alongside thousands of many diverse South Africans, as we joined together in a parade through the streets of Tshwane (Pretoria). The SA Jewish community float took the form of an ARK containing a library filled with books collected from the learners from our Jewish Schools.  The library was presented to the Mayor of Tshwane as a donation to the Arcadia Primary School, in that City. Many members of our Joburg and Pretoria communities came to join the celebration.

The Jewish ARK created huge interested in the participants, and many took pictures of our float and spontaneously danced to the Jewish music, as it made its way through the streets of the city.
It was a celebration of the richness of cultural diversity in our Rainbow Nation. The Jewish community expressed itself as proudly Jewish and proudly South African and it is hoped that the concept of the Acts of Random Kindness will have a lasting impact, beyond yesterday’s carnival.

Hidden Treasures - Our Living history

Over the past month we have been in the process of moving our archive into the heart of Beyachad, making it more accessible and exciting for our community and the many people who use it.

Stifling Voices and Promoting Antisemitic Tropes

We find ourselves amid a troubling controversy stemming from a contentious interview conducted by SABC journalist Juliet Newell with Dr Mamphela Ramphele of the Desmond Tutu Foundation. During the exchange, Newell challenged Dr Ramphele on her claim that Israel is perpetrating a “Holocaust” in Gaza. This regrettable incident casts a stark light on two deeply concerning trends: the rise of Holocaust inversion and the systematic efforts to stifle voices that dare to challenge entrenched anti-Israel narratives.
